Mid Year 2024 Art Supplies Haul!
It's winter in Melbourne, it's very cold and miserable, so what better way to cheer myself up than with a cosy June art supplies haul! I've bought a few bits and pieces lately so I thought I'd share them with you. 😊
I also mentioned the old Daniel Smith secondary set, which is still available on Amazon. Has this set been discontinued? I don't know, but here they are just in case!

It's a storage tote bag for their duel ended marker pens, but I figured it would also fit many other kinds of art supplies, so let's find out in this video just how much it will hold. Is it any good? Is it better than the much more expensive Jazza bag duo I bought earlier in the year?...

Sending blessings of healing, thank you for you video enjoy learning about new changes to Daniel smith watercolor grouping. Also enjoyed learning about new art supplies. 💙🇨🇦🇺🇲🖌🎨🖍🖊
Thank you! I'm all better now, yay! I will do a video on all the DS sets soon, once I receive a few more colours from the US. They're on the way!
Love seeing studio spaces! I think your studio is larger then my studio appartement 😂
Haha! 😂 I've lived in some tiny apartments too - this is essentially a "granny flat" and consists of bedroom (now office), bathroom, kitchenette and living area - that part's my studio. So yes, a one bedroom apartment basically, lol.
@@BeckyTregear its soo nice to have that attached to your house!
I've thought about getting one of those sta-wet palette, but i dont know how much i would use it, and have n o where to put it to keep it wet i just went and bought metallic sharpies, ...so shiny 😀😀
The bigger palettes would be super difficult to store! The small ones I tend to let dry out between use, so that they don't go mouldy. Ooooh shiny markers! 😍
i just got a ceramic palette i have wanted for forever too, its in a drawer since i dont trust myself not to break it lol and now i want all the shiny markers!! lol
Astonishing! 200 pencils used over 15 hours to complete extremely detail and intricate work of art. I'm flabbergasted as to how to responsed to such dedication. Needless to say the finish rendering is beautiful but I doubt I'll ever attempt this feat. Soooo..... what will you do to surpass this?💜💜💜💜💜💜💜
Thank you so much. I'm still traumatised from it and have to do anything which even comes close to this again, LOL! 😂
The color wheel palette reminded me of a Robax palette as well! I bought a Meeden porcelain palette last year (not the Quiller knockoff, but the rectangular one), got intimidated to fill it and then forgot it existed LOL. Now trying to figure out what I want to put in it. Good luck!
I'm the same with this one; have no idea which paints to put in. 😂 I hope you get to use your porcelain one soon!
Thank you for your color swatches and commentary. The kookaburra drawing looks very pretty. God bless you!
Thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed it. 😊
what was the name of that round palette with all those wells?
Mijello Colour Wheel Palette - 50 wells. I bought mine at The Art Shop in Melbourne, but internationally Artemiranda has it as well and I think they ship all over the world (or some of it at least, lol). Hopefully you can find it online! 🙂
I’m in love with this painting and your transparency about the entire process, makes me feel not so bad lol. What paper did you use ? I find opaque white is trash it soaks in no matter what. I’d use dr. Ph Martin’s or signo … Your creation and colorful style is gorgeous.
Thank you so much! I'm pretty sure this was in an Etchr Sketchbook - the ones with white covers, not the Signature books. Cold press paper.
Great, i love my Kuretake paints !!
They're awesome paints! I have a couple of new sets, because I must own them all, and they keep releasing them...aaahhhh!!! 😂
ts a color wheel why not hahahahahah I am buying wool and some needle felting books on 26th , also ink erazer
I've never tried needle felting....I hope it's fun!
@@BeckyTregear I have been needle felting for about 6 years on and off. it is very reaxing ,to do however Needles are sharp and I still stab myself ...Och! Felts by Phillippa I follow for many years

Oh Becky I am sorry 🥰 ....oh mandarin's yummy. we are in Summer (2 days in) it is cloudy and muggy here today . your Art Haul is Awesome .I feel the price rise ,it just grreed .......things are getting crazy . price . happy switching xxxx
Sounds nice and warm, haha! The price rise came from the supplier, so The Art Shop was forced to increase theirs as well, but they were very good and actually told people in advance, saying that their stock would stay at the same price until July 1 before going up.
🥰🥰🥰
What fun! And a great way to spend a cold winter's day indoors <3
It sure was! 😁
I’ve never got on with the big branded plastic stay wet palettes. But I have my eye on some really nice looking little ones on Etsy that are 3d printed. I think some were from a miniature painting store so they aren’t massive like many of the bigger brand ones.
I have The Army Painter wet palette for miniatures and that's a really good one. I was looking for something a little bigger for larger blobs of paint so hopefully this new Masterson one will do the job! There are lots of options out there....some very tempting ones, haha.
I only got to buy some stuff this week, have let everything run down. Some more drawing pads, pastel paper and oil pastels.
Nope, you're good. When it was announced that PO48 was going to be discontinued Daniel Smith bought up the entire remaining stock of it. He has said he has enough to make tha paints he has containing PO48 for decades to come. DECADES. I still stocked up anyway, lol.
That’s reassuring!🧡
where do you buy the Schmincke granulating sets?
I bought mine from Jackson's Art, which is a UK company but they ship internationally and now they have a warehouse in Australia too! In Melbourne, Senior Art Supplies have the sets (probably more expensive though).
@@BeckyTregear I have been looking for somewhere in Melbourne to get them from. Preferably in the cardboard boxes (as they are cheaper) but I haven’t been able to find them.
@@BeckyTregear for some reason when I look on line it keeps brining up cheap joes which is based in the USA. No idea why this is happening since but it’s driving me nuts
Lots of lovely goodies enjoy using them I would get those other paints you will regret it. Get well soon I am in the UK so it’s our summer x
Thank you! I hope you're getting some nice weather. 😊
Aww snap I've just bought those exact 2 sets of Daniel Smith watercolours 🫸🫷😆 I heard the orange one had been discontinued also and it's such a beautiful colour I had to jump on it lol I ordered the granulating set of kuretake watercolours on 18th May and it's still saying we will email you when we have some in stock aaagghh you're certainly right about that unfortunately and the price!!
Nice one! I may have just bought the remaining DS tubes to make up all four sets...AND I found the Kuretake granulating set at The Art Shop today, so I have it now! Totally unexpected; apparently they just arrived in store yesterday. 😂
@@BeckyTregear nicely done
I had no idea Daniel Smith were getting rid of some colors Becky. I'm glad you mentioned it. My first two sets of their paints were the 3 pack of primary and secondary colors. I bought them cheap from Amazon and I see both packs are still listed on US Amazon for now. My French ultramarine is getting quite low so I was trying to decide whether to buy that set again or just buy the paint stick because it's cheaper than the single tube. I bought a few of the paint sticks recently to try and they work great with a piece chopped off in a half pan. I prefer that to squeezing the tube into the pan and then waiting for it to dry. I use the Quinacridone Burnt Orange in place of burnt sienna so if they stop making it I might either buy a tube of Transparent red oxide ( which I also like and it's very like the quin burnt orange), or just a stick of Burnt sienna, which is a little browner. My hubby was just made redundant so I'm on a no buy for now though so I'll just have to look at my available choices later I guess. Luckily Daniel Smith seem to make a variety of overlapping or very similar colors to choose from.
From what I'm hearing, Daniel Smith has hoarded the orange pigment so it may well be years before they run out. It doesn't seem like it will be soon anyway, which is good because I love their Sap Green. The trio sets are cheaper than individual tubes; the red is a series 3 and costs a fortune here. I found the set on Amazon for much less so I've ended up with all of the primary colours lol! They're coming from the US so I should get them in a week or two. 😊
Of course you need to get more Daniel Smith watercolor! We have fun videos in our future 😊 Delightful outdoor footage; thanks for sharing, Hope you feel better
Thank you, I'm all better now. 😊 New Daniel Smith paints are on their way - I couldn't help myself, lol!
Lovely supplies Becky 😊 Ir has turned very cold in Vic now....Well into Winter 🤣🥶
It was nice and sunny just before, and now a huge cloud has come over, doh! Back inside I go, lol.
Nice art haul! I would love to see you get the Daniel Smith supplies and do comparisons. It would be so interesting to see. Plus more Daniel Smith paints is a win win in my opinion. 😄
Looks like I've ended up with the other Daniel Smith tubes, lol! I'll get that video organised hopefully soon, once one of my orders arrives from the US. I decided I need to try them all, lol.
I saw all those Golden paints at The Art Shop and was tempted to get some of the open tubes to try before the price rise, but I have soooooo many other paints I don't have space for them 😭
I can understand that! Their display of Golden paints is huge. 😱
@@BeckyTregear I'll just have to settle for my billion tubes of Atelier Interactive for now lol
I'm also in Melbourne and yes, it is cold and dreary. Thank you for brightening my Saturday morning. I'm also trying to build up my Daniel Smith watercolour paint (everything is SO expensive in Australia) and I appreciated the information about colours that may be discontinued. What is your local art shop that you mentioned?
I'm sure it is colder this year than last! That would be The Art Shop in Bayswater. They've just gotten the new Kuretake sets in (Sumi and granulating) so I ended up buying the granulating one just now and have more to add to the haul! 🫣
I really like Daniel Smith's watercolor paints. I have too many of them (never). They were my first top-tier watercolor paints, and I loved how they moved, dried, and colored. I loved your new big palette... that thing is a beast! I can't wait to see it all filled.
I may have found the other colours to make up the old and new primary and secondary trios, lol! I love DS paints, and yes I have entirely too many as well....no wait, it isn't possible! 😂
@@BeckyTregear If you find some colors that are hard to find there, let me know! I can ship to you. Daniel Smith is the easiest prof paint you can find here in Canada.
Lol .. every time I get a bag,it seems at the time it'll work but ..I'm always looking 😄
Oh that's so true! I've already managed to wreck the zip on one side when the end came out and I had to sew it back together. What a pain! 😂
Lots of goodies. Get well soon. Your weather doesn’t look too good, stay warm and play with all your art supplies.
Thank you, I will! I'm a lot better now, after finally getting over the cold! It went on for weeks, doh!
Always fun to have an art haul!
I had a good time....already ended up with a couple more things because I found the other Kuretake set at my local art store today, LOL! 😂
Excellent haul. 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉I am all about acrylic markers on tiny canvases at the moment. The markers went on sale so I bought them even though the first set is still good. Aka impulse buy 😂 take care
I love markers on tiny canvases! Have fun with them - you can't have too many of those anyway, haha!
Nice haul Becky! I love my Baohong Sketchbooks, I have both Cold-pressed and Hot-pressed books. I would love some of those fresh Mandarin Oranges you have, that is so awesome! I would gladly send you some of the heat that we're having in Alabama if I could, it's hot today (95°) and going to be even hotter this weekend... in the high 90s 🥵
The mandarins have been delicious this year! I don't like the heat either; we get those temperatures in summer too - blergh! I like temperate weather, not too hot and not too cold, lol.
@@BeckyTregear The Mandarins looked delicious! I don't like the extreme heat either and it gets hot and stays hot here, for too dang long!
I bought that same wet palette but I haven't used it yet. I bought it not long after I bought my other one, because I wanted more space. I'm interested in this as you can wash the sheets and use them over and over. I wouldn't mind the golden set. I have wanted to try Golden for a long time, since I see so many amazing artists use them. I went down the Liquitex professional route instead, because they're much easier to find here. But I still could be tempted to get that set. Although are they all or mostly all transparent? I see the black lines on the colours you showed. I'm never a fan of transparent. I always screw it up 😂 and probably would prefer opaque colours that I can thin down myself. That colour well palette 😍
I didn't know the sheets are reusable - I'm glad you told me that! 😂 Yes, the Golden paints can be rather transparent, I guess because they're pure pigments and a lot are naturally that way. I'll just mix white into them if need be. 😄
I think they are. I saw a video or read it on the pack or something. I think it might be what's sets it apart from others. I have a similar one to your other one and I'm not looking forward to when the paper runs out because I like that it has perfect size sheets (I know you can make your own) and then I got that one and saw that you can wash them or something. In saying that I still haven't tested it out 😂
I'm so bad. I ordered those paints you have. I always google things after I see them on your channel. I am so terrible. But I've always wanted to try golden anyway. I felt guilty buying the paints, as I do have great paints, I have spent a fortune on only 6 months ago, but all will be used and I decided these new things will be a birthday gift to myself (that's in 12 days).
@@lozantoninocreations Happy early birthday! 🎂 Enjoy and the guilt shall pass, haha. ❤️
Love that Mijello palet. Where did you buy that? Would love that for my studio..
I bought it at The Art Shop, in Bayswater Melbourne. Being Mijello, I'd hope these wouldn't be to difficult to find?
Fun goodies!
All things I totally need! 😂
Lovely purchases!! I love the pencil case, there’s just something about pencil cases that I can’t resist (I think it’s their close proximity to a “bag” lol). I didn’t know DS changed their primary and secondary sets! I have the original 2 sets, but I have sooo much paint, I don’t see myself buying the new sets right away. I also have that stay wet palette. I tend to use it with gouache and I have one that’s slightly bigger for acrylic. I know what you mean about the plastic feeling, but it’s the easiest stay wet palette for me to buy locally, so I with it anyway 😂. The one purchase that I keep thinking I want to use my local art store gift card on, is DS sap green. It’s my favourite with undersea green and I have also been worried about losing access to it!
I can't resist a pencil case, haha! 😂 I totally agree about Sap Green; I would hate to lose that particular mix of pigments, it's such a beautiful colour! The best sap green of all that I've tried. I worked out that to make up all four sets, I just need maybe 3 more colours as I have the rest of them, so it should be something I can organise to do in the future. I'm most interested in Carmine, as that looks like a very pretty red!
I'm a bagaholic so totally understand the pencil case collection. I seem to have started one myself 😂
Love your haul. Hope you feel better. Keep eating those oranges. Karen from Canada ☺☺💖💖🍊🍊
Thank you, I"m so much better now! I've been having one of those years where I keep catching colds, wah!
Thank you Becky. I just clicked on the link to those gorgeous DS colours. Looking forward to playing with those when they arrive. Freezing up in Canberra and I love the look of those mandarins 😊. Hope you feel better soon. Cheers
I was surprised at how cheap that set is, compared to the individual tubes! Oh it has been ridiculously cold this winter - Canberra even more so than Melbourne I'd say! I seem to have adjusted to the cold now though, and I'm feeling back to normal now. Hopefully no more colds! Maybe the mandarins are doing something, lol.
yum, those mandarins look deeelicious! 🤤 I know we're always complaining about the weather, but I just can't help it lol 😂I'm sweating.. my room won't cool down.. don't like the heat! I'd totally switch places with you 😂 can't wait to see what you're going to do with that humongous color wheel palette 😄
I complain about the heat just as much too, lol! This winter has been particularly cold though, more so than last year where it was a lot milder. The mandarins have been excellent this season though - loads of flavour!
I have several of the Sta wet palettes same size. I tried out one and I loved it so much, that I bought 3 more. I finally paint with acrylics without the pressure of having to rush so the colors won’t dry out. Or never putting enough paint out in order to not waste it. I am absolutely thrilled with it. Also, I think the doubts about having a “coarse” plastic pallet comes from the watercolor “corner’. 😅 I wouldn’t use such a plastic pallet for watercolors. But I think acrylics are more heavy duty and it feels just fine, for me at least. 😊
I feel the same way about acrylics; they're so much easier to use when they aren't drying out all of the time! They become a lot easier to mix and blend. I'm sure I'll like the palette once I get using it; it just feels weird for some reason, lol.
Your winter looks like my summer here in North Wales!! It's actually pouring down as I type! Boo!! We've had zero summer so far! I'm so envious of your baohong watercolour books!! I'd love to own one of them one day, and the Sumi paints look really interesting, I'm looking forward to some acrylic painting video's they look awesome! Loved that pencil case too! :D
Summer in the Netherlands is also like autumn.....
Melbourne gets strong seasons as we are so far south, where northern parts of Australia are warmer all year 'round. May was gorgeous this year, and then as soon as June arrived the temperatures plummeted and it has taken a while to acclimatise to the new weather, lol. I whinge just as much in the summer when it gets really hot! 😂 I hope you get some lovely weather soon. We actually started off summer with a lot of rain as well, then it dried up with no rain for nearly three months. Strange weather indeed.
its the same for me here in Lower Saxony Germany
IIRC Daniel Smith bought up all the PO48 on the market and has enough to last 15 years. I can’t recall where I remember this from tho!😂
They're good at doing that; they hoarded all of the Quin Gold too, lol! 15 years is probably as long as it will take me to use my current supply, haha.
Nope, PO48 is discontinued, together with PR206.
Yes, I thought so! Daniel Smith has hoarded a bunch of it I think!
@@BeckyTregear hoarded 😂
Weren’t you on a no-buy? Or was that someone else 🤔?
That's Miranda, haha. I was on Low Buy last year but this year I have no restrictions. Really haven't bought a lot though because I keep getting sent things, lol.
@@BeckyTregear aren’t you lucky 😄
First!

OMG! I love your art with the Paul Ruben neon!, woo hoo!❤
Thank you! 😊
I have changed my mind about The Sennelier 48 set .they are too much money . you made me laugh thank you xxxx Than you for sharing happy swatching xxxxxx
Very helpful, thank you 😊
I get nervous with markers that aren’t fine tip that I’m going to color outside of the lines a lot. You make it look easy!
Oh me too, haha! I think the trick is to not hold the pen to paper for too long so as to avoid the ink spreading into the paper and going past the lines. Easier said than done sometimes, lol.
Is it reweteable?
Yes, it's like watercolour or gouache. 🙂
I use Daiso sumi ink for Calligraphy and find it bleeds less on cheap paper than the more expensive inks.
It’s really great ink! 💜
